How is a phobia created?

A phobia is an acute irrational fear that is dramatically blown out of all proportion. This is basically an external symbol of an internal anxiety. You will most certainly be aware that your phobia is irrational but you will be unable to think logically because your subconscious mind is protecting you from the trauma it believes lies in the source of the phobia.

Two ways a phobia is created?

A fear or phobia is a neurotic behaviour created through direct or indirect stimuli. Both are a symptom of blocked emotions but they have a big difference in their formation.

Direct phobia

The simplest to explain is the direct phobia. It is caused by a frightening event and the emotion from this is held and locked away together with the memory of what happened. For example if, as a child you were frightened of and then bitten by a dog, you may become scared of dogs from then onwards, even if they are friendly.  The memory is locked in and held with the original frightening feelings so that when you see a dog, the fear is brought out automatically. As long as the negative association is powerful enough, the unconscious mind thinks;

'Now, this has been very traumatic. How do I keep myself from getting in this kind of situation again? I know, I'll attach terrible feelings to this situation, that way I'll steer clear of it in the future and be safe'.

Indirect phobia

The indirect phobia doesn't have such a simple cause. It is created by a build up of anxiety known as ‘free floating anxiety’. The root cause of this anxiety is generated when our minds are young but as we experience additional anxieties as we grow up, it can 'snowball'. At some point this unconscious anxiety is then projected onto an outside object by the subconscious mind. This could be in the form of a fear, phobia, addiction, habit, or negative self image. It will have some symbolic association to the original anxieties but will often have been subconsciously changed or distorted.

Most Hypnotherapists have only been trained in 'suggestion therapy' or 'Neuro Linguistic Programming' techniques, which help remove the symptom but have little regard for the underlying cause. Every phobia has buried emotion associated with it, so simply removing the projected fear will leave the person open to the creation of a new phobia or even another type of nervous condition altogether. Lee has also been trained in 'analytical therapy' which uncovers and eliminates the buried emotion, resulting in a complete cure.

Phobia's and free floating anxiety

When this inner ‘free floating anxiety’ is projected onto something else it is known as 'symptom substitution'. The root of the problem still has not been resolved. It’s like removing a garden weed from the surface of the ground only for the root to find its way to the surface once more.

'Symptom substitution' could then manifest itself as a nerve rash, or you might find yourself beginning to stammer. It must be remembered that all psychological problems have a cause, and to bring permanent relief it is necessary to deal with the underlying cause. The only safe way to deal with these symptoms is to remove the inner anxiety with a technique such as hypno-analysis.

Attaching emotions to situations is one of the primary ways that we humans learn. Sometimes we just get the wiring wrong and need to be re-programmed. The actual phobia manifests itself in different ways. Some sufferers experience it almost all the time and others just in response to direct stimuli. Everyone has developed their own unique formula for when and how to feel 'bad'.

Imagine how great it would feel to take control and be free of your fear or phobia!
