Hypnotherapy Terms

Suggestion Therapy
IAH therapists have been trained in the use of suggestion therapy, which is also referred to as Clinical Hypnosis. This type of session is very effective in the treatment of habits and removing minor behavioural problems such as stopping smoking, calming nerves before a flight or exam or where a quick fix is required. This type of therapy should not be used for deep rooted emotional problems as it will only remove the symptom and does not treat the underlying cause.

Hypno-analysis (Analytical Hypnotherapy)
This type of analytical hypnotherapy is one of the best types of therapy in the world for treating deep rooted emotional problems. The IAH hypnotherapists are trained and specialise in hypno-analysis, which works by helping you find and release the root cause of your symptom. You are taken back to the main emotional confilct (almost always from childhood), work through and release it. This is achieved within a non-judged, supportive and comfortable environment and usually takes between eight and ten 50 minute sessions.

Free floating anxiety
We are all carrying around repressed emotions. These emotions have not been worked through so we cannot analyse them. They cause an internal anxiety called ‘free floating anxiety’. We have all felt grumpy, a little bit stressed and short tempered, yet we cannot think of any reason why we feel this way. This is our internal anxiety changing our behaviour. It is not clear to us why we are feeling so anxious, we are just aware of the feelng.

Conscious mind
The conscious mind is the part of the mind we most relate to. It's the one you are using to read this text and takes care of your intellectual thinking. Although your conscious mind thinks it’s in charge and in control of your body and thoughts it’s not! If this was the case you could simply think about relieving your symptoms and they would disappear!

Unconscious mind
Also refered to as the subconscious, the unconscious mind is amazing! It’s a supercomputer running thousands of your bodies processes from pumping blood around your system to breathing, controlling your hormones, pupil dilation and so on. It has stored every memory and experience you have ever had, yes it’s all there stored away!

Your subconscious mind positions your feet and enables you to walk - you don’t have to think about moving one foot faster than the other to negotiate a corner, your subconscious mind simply takes care of it for you. The subconscious mind is also fantastic at remembering and storing emotions. We all will have experienced strong emotions when we hear a familiar song on the radio and it transports us back in time. These thoughts and emotions have not been forgotten, they simply emerge from our subconscious once the right buttons are pushed.

The subconscious mind’s primary role is the function of self-preservation, its purpose is to protect you from danger and traumatic experiences. For example if a person is in a terrible car accident they may remember the sequence of events leading up to the accident and will even remember laying on the road with the paramedics around them but their subconscious mind will almost certainly repress the memory of their head hitting the car windscreen as it is too traumatic for their conscious mind to deal with the memory. But it is not forgotten, it is simply not accessible by the logical conscious mind - this is what is known as a repression.

Symptom substitution
This can occur when suggestion therapy removes the physical symptom but does not address the underlying root of the problem. In this scenario the ailment will return after a few weeks or the deep rooted anxiety will create another symptom. The only safe way to deal with these symptoms is to remove the inner anxiety with a technique such as hypnoanalysis.
